With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, this week we wanted to focus on Love Magic & Manifestation: what it is, common myths and misconceptions about love spells, and some ideas on how to incorporate love magic and manifestation into your Valentine’s Day.
What Love Magic Is (And What It Is NOT)
Popular media loves the trope of casting a spell to make a person fall in love. Likewise, concepts like “soul mates” or “twin flames” are often used to justify disrespecting personal autonomy by practicing spell work on others without their consent. This is not to say whether concepts like soul mates are true or untrue, but rather to make the distinction that any physical or metaphysical connection should honor an individual’s agency. The key to love magic is understanding that the energy of love is never about control, magical or otherwise.
Love magic can be thought of as simply using magic, spell work, or rituals to invite more loving energy into your life, to strengthen loving bonds, or to align yourself with the energy of love in order to form deeper connections with others and within yourself. Now that we’ve discussed the basis of what love magic is, here are some ideas for how you can practice love magic.
A love spell is created and cast with the intention of strengthening or attracting the energy of love in your life. Spells come in all shapes and sizes: they can be long or short, original or borrowed from another source, and they can be performed through the written word, spoken word, song, or even just thoughts. Paper, candles, water, herbs, oils, plants, crystals, or really any components you can think of can be used in the preparation or casting of a spell. What matters is that the process feels meaningful to you, and that you hold your intention for the spell while performing it.
If you are new to spellcasting, books on magic can be great resources, as can online sources. You can also get tools like premade spell jars, which include all of the supplies you need to cast a spell. While casting a love spell you can also call on spirits to help you. For instance, you could call on love goddesses, gods, angels, and deities for advice or to ask for support in casting your spell. Communing with these deities may even give you intuitive insight into specific words or actions that can help you create and cast your spell.
If spell work doesn’t feel right for you, active manifestation practices may be a good alternative. Manifestation is essentially the belief that your intentions and thoughts have the power to help energetically attract things into your life. In this instance, your goal may be to attract a new partner, strengthen a current relationship, or improve your own self-love and confidence.
There are many fun and creative ways you can go about manifesting these things. Some practices include creating a vision board, doing visualizations, or constructing a crystal grid with stones known for having loving or passionate energy, such as rose quartz, amethyst, prehnite, carnelian, lepidolite, red tiger eye, and many more.
An important aspect of manifesting is also being open to receiving what you asked for. If you are attempting to manifest more love in your life, part of the work will be making sure you are open to accepting loving energy from yourself and others. You can do this through rituals like self-care, affirmations, or working on your heat chakra. Of the energy centers throughout the body known as the seven chakras, the heart chakra is what rules our ability to express and accept love, our sense of connection to others, and our willingness to both grow and nurture. By learning about and working with your heart chakra, you will likely be able to enhance your manifestation abilities when it comes to love.
If you are interested in pursuing love spells or manifestation practices, you can check out tools like DTC’s Love Altar Candles, Love Crystal Kits, Crystal Grids, and all of our different books on magic. If you are looking for a fun Valentine’s Day activity, Downtown Tarot Company offers services like couple’s tarot readings (romantic only) and couples aura photos (romantic, platonic, familial).
If there is only one takeaway about love magic, let it be that the most important thing about your spell work or manifestation ritual is that it fills you with a feeling of love and joy while practicing it. Simply enjoying this process will already help you to connect loving energy.
